Why This Blog Exists

My name is Wencheng Yan, and I’m a PhD student in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before I enrolled at UCSB, I traveled around China extensively, spending as much time as possible in countryside villages and towns. In order to better illustrate the rich variety of Chinese vernacular architecture, I’ve included a slideshow on the right of about one hundred pictures that I took during my travels (the video is from Youtube!).

The main purposes of the Chinese Vernacular Architecture Blog are to:

  • Share my thoughts and academic research on Chinese vernacular architecture;
  • Provide a resource for other vernacular architecture scholars as well as anyone interested in learning more about China’s vernacular architecture;
  • Offer a platform for discussion on Chinese vernacular architecture through visitor comments;
  • Promote historic conservation of China’s cultural and architectural heritage, especially in rural areas;
  • Discuss environmental issues as they pertain to China’s rural population;
  • Anything else that comes to mind!

If you think that my blog is interesting and informative, and you have a website and/or blog, I’d really appreciate it if you’d link to this blog so that other people can find it. I’d be more than happy to reciprocate! If you have comments or questions about this blog please feel free to email me at wencheng AT chinesevernaculararchitecture.com.

Thanks and enjoy!
